Positioning of Lighting in Offices

Positioning of Lighting in Offices

Proper corporate lighting is essential to provide visual comfort to workers and support their physical and mental well-being. In today's article, we share several tips for improving the functioning of lighting in a specific space: offices.

Positioning of luminaires

Glare is the factor that causes the most visual discomfort. This visual sensation is produced by the existence of unprotected light sources within the field of vision, which can cause visual discomfort and momentary visual impairment. This discomfort is caused by excess luminance in the field of vision. The discomfort can be direct , when glare occurs through light fixtures or lamps, or indirect , when light is reflected by certain surfaces.

In offices, discomfort caused by direct glare is usually due to direct glare from lighting fixtures, or direct sunlight. In the first situation, this effect can be neutralized by using accessories on the luminaires to protect the lamps. In the second situation, you can protect the windows with blinds.

To avoid glare, it is best to position the lights correctly. General ceiling lighting should be parallel to the windows, so that workstations can be positioned perpendicular to the light sources. Windows must have slatted or bar blinds that allow for the regulation of light entry.

Indirect glare can be caused by existing surfaces in the workspace, such as computer screens, furniture, or the use of glossy paper. To eliminate indirect reflections, it is necessary to pay attention to the materials and finishes used in the furniture (with gloss), the components of the space (glazed surfaces or with bright colors), and the positioning of computer screens.

Preferably, the distribution of light sources should be positioned, considering that:

1. The light points must not be in the worker's field of vision, which on average extends 30º above the axis of vision (fig. 1).

2. Light points must not be placed in such a way that their reflection on the work surface dazzles the worker. The work plan corresponds to the area where the worker's computer is located (fig.2).

3. The light points must be placed laterally, so that they are not in the worker's field of vision and do not dazzle him by reflection (fig. 3).

4. To avoid shadows and reflections, light sources (windows and lamps) should not be positioned behind the workstation.

The color temperature

Another important aspect in office lighting is the choice of the color temperature of the lamps. It is worth noting that the reference to “warm” or “cold” colors of light has the opposite meaning to that of color temperature. Generally higher color temperatures (cool colors) become more pleasant for workers.
