Lighting for Emergency Plan

Lighting for Emergency Plan

Emergency lighting plays a very important role in people's safety and well-being. It is activated when the electricity supply fails, protecting us from accidents, preventing panic, and guiding us to a safe evacuation. These lights are strategically placed in buildings such as shopping malls, hotels, hospitals or offices.

There are a few different emergency lighting solutions that we describe now.

We have permanent emergency lighting that always remains on, functioning as regular and emergency lighting. This lighting is common in theaters, cinemas and other places where sudden darkness can cause panic.

Non-permanent emergency lighting is only activated when the main power supply fails.

Sustained emergency lighting combines the two solutions described above, with one set of lights used for regular use and the other for emergencies.

Where should emergency lighting be located?

Emergency lights must be located at a minimum height of 2 m above ground level.

They must be installed in the following locations:

  • In existing doors for escape routes.
  • On the stairs, so that each flight of stairs is directly lit.
  • At any other level change.
  • When changing direction and crossing corridors.
  • In places where there is a potential danger.
  • In places where safety equipment is found.

How long does emergency lighting last?

The duration of emergency lighting is determined by the battery capacity and the power consumption of the lights.

Lights must remain on long enough for all occupants to exit the building safely. In some cases, more time may also be needed to allow workers responsible for safety-critical tasks to complete them.

The duration of emergency lighting varies depending on the architecture of the building and its use. A common requirement is that lights work for at least three hours after a power outage.
