Large parking lots in condominiums, companies and shopping centers, as well as garages, need well-planned lighting. Uniform lighting in these locations gives users a sense of security when entering or leaving these spaces. Lighting shaded areas also aids orientation and helps prevent accidents.
The first factor that contributes to good lighting in parking lots and garages is installing products with high light intensity.
Due to the large size of a parking lot and the high ceilings, lamps or luminaires with low luminous flux (measured in lumens) will not illuminate efficiently.
Parking lot lights and lamps must have high luminous flux.
Luminous flux represents how much a lamp or luminaire is capable of illuminating a given space. It is measured in lumens and is always indicated on product data sheets and packaging. The more lumens a product has, the brighter the light emitted will be.
The amount of lumens also influences the amount of electrical energy consumed by a lamp. “Luminous efficiency” tells us how many lumens per watts (lm/W) are consumed.
2. Luminaires with high IP and IK protection ratings
Another very important aspect that also needs to be taken into consideration is the degree of protection of the products. Lights installed in uncovered parking lots need to be protected, for example, against heavy rain, gusts of wind or impacts.
IP is the protection index against the ingress of liquids and solids. The first digit refers to protection against solid objects and the second digit refers to protection against liquids. IK is the impact protection index. It is important to observe these values and invest in resistant products so that you do not have to spend a lot on maintenance later.
